Most engagements are paid in cash, scoped to what the cash covers, because a smaller engagement that finishes is worth more than a large one that stalls. If you are heading for venture money, I am open to taking part of the fee in equity, and we can talk it through on the first call. There is no wrong answer.

Questions founders ask
What does it cost?
The first conversation is thirty minutes and free. After that it is scoped to what you need, and we settle how to structure it together on the call.
What if I need to clear it with an employer?
The agreement and the invoice go out early so your legal team can read them, and payment is not due until the week before the work starts. Plenty of founders here still have a day job.
Can my partner or spouse be involved?
Yes. They are welcome in the sessions and it usually helps. This tends to be a household decision as much as a business one.
